I can't help so much as sympathise. I know exactly what you mean, I am suffering the same way (well, almost). I currently hold a position as a software developer, after being spotted by management and promoted from a technician. This seems to be the only way onto the ladder at the moment, the very, very bottom, just under the floor.

I did apply for a job at MyOpenApps (sheffield based ASP linux shop. Nice), but after initial interview and the promise of another, I heard nothing for a month, then after contacting them myself learned that they didn't want anyone else, but just didn't get round to telling me. Seems the attitude of IT companies to staff, customers, and even potential staff now, is getting worse all the time...

Where are you based? I vaguely remember you not living in Sheffield?
