I seem to remember the behaviour was changed a couple of kernel
revisions ago (2.2.14?) so that it was possible to eject a CD using
the button at any time.
If the disk is still mounted, however VFS does complain via
/var/log/messages.
You can still umount the drive after the media has been ejected.
