Re: [Sheflug] NFS the hard way

How about taking the target disk and plugging it into your server?

Tomsrtbt CAN do mount, and it can do some basic networking (ifconfig,
route). So, seems to me that the only question is - is there nfs? I seem
to remember a method for checking this: as root do
mount -t nfs localhost:/tmp /mnt
it will SURELY prduce an error - but you will see, if the error produced
is 'unknown fs nfs' or any other.

I don't understand - if you have on your network more than 2 machines -
the server and the target with a blank hd, why don't you run a server on a
functional machine, attaching the blank hd to it?...

If you are quite comfortable with removing the server from public access
for the time of this transfer, why don't you completely disconnect it from
the network and connect it ONLY to your target machine via network /
parallel / serial cable - millions of ways - if you just NEED to quickly
and reliably copy the disk. If on the contrary you want to play - fair
enough:-)

I also don't understand what you mean by "can't copy active
executables"? Can't you? Why not boot mounting your root read-only? Then
you are guaranteed that nothing is modified during the transfer. Besides,
you would have mountd, nfsd, portmap (not to mention init, inetd, bash
etc.) running anyway...

Seems to me like we are trying to catch a black cat in a dark room with
closed eyes:-)

Good Luck:-)
