Chicken and egg I'm afraid. The PO didn't allow people to connect phones
because you could buy them  - rather, it was the other way around,
people wanted more spangly phones, and when the PO give indication that
would be allowed, they started to be available for sale (of course,
IIRC, the PO was the first company to sell phones :)

And you may buy a DSL modem, but that has nothing to do with your DSL
service. The DSL service is end-to-end - and includes line adaptor
equipment. You're not allowed to connect just anything to the phone line
- if you do, BT may cut you off and / or take you to court. It's plain
illegal.

Who knows :)) I would imagine 'features' includes the range of
anti-tamper mechanisms built in :)
