I bought a single head 16Mb G400 when they were fairly new, and I've
never had any issues with it.
IIRC the Matrox cards are some of the best supported cards under X -
also things like bttv and OMS do hardware acceleration with the Matrox
cards/drivers, with ATI h/w acceleration support following shortly.

So far, I've not even considered looking for another card.

I've got a couple of ATI Expert 98 and Mach64 8Mb cards kicking
around, and they're easy enough to get going too.
