ext2 and (I think) ISO9660 filesystems are fine over NFS. The problem is
that not all filesystems have the right support for NFS in them - it's not
just a matter of saying "well, this person wants to access a file, and
they're not local, but we'll do it anyway". NFS is deep magic, when trying
to code in the support in the filesystem. There has been a lot of stink
recently over Reiser not allowing NFS mounts. That's in the fixing, too.
Since, in general, people don't want to NFS share floppies too often
(usually it's just easier to carry the floppy to the other machine, or copy
the files off and then NFS them) nobody has paid much attention to the
problem. If you want to try and fix it, feel free (this is what free
software is all about, after all) but I doubt you'll get much of a
mouth-foaming frenzy out of the grand FS hackers out there.

Showmount is the program to do what you described.
