My Dell 486/33 running Smoothwall doesn't lose anything with my external 56k 
modem, and that's with it servicing the network too. 

In defence of the Winmodem <pre-emptively ducking...> the one I put in my 
kids PC seems absolutely fine..it can be faster than my external, consumes 
little CPU time and just works. The only drawback is the speaker isn't very 
loud...call me old fashioned but I like to listen to negotiation sequences. 
Unfortunately it's an Ambient/Intel HaM-chipset, Intel are promising a Linux 
driver and the only open-source driver I found just locks the machine when it 
tries talking to the hardware.
