I found Octave could do everything MATLAB could (although I must admit
that I didn't use anything esoteric). MATLAB is available for Linux if you
are willing to pay for it, and seems like the industry standard in this
area. Are you sure you haven't missed something in the docs? ISTR the
MATLAB v. Octave differences page wasn't particularly long.
