[Sheflug] Distro change (was Re: Debian)

If you want to try a distro like debian, or in fact, any you aren't used to if you don't know your way around too well, do it on either another machine, or a second hard disk in the same machine. If you have a working system you need to keep running, keep it running!

My first taste of debian was on a 486sx50 many moons ago, but I didn't use it seriously till I got my laptop last year. I didn't put it on my main box because until I had it configured, there are some things I like to leave as they are. Whats the point having a machine capable of years of uptime if you destroy it on a whim?

So, if you want to mess, don't do it until you have a nice little cage for it where it can't get out and do damage (or should I say, you do damage?)

TBH installing debian on my laptop was the best idea I ever had. At first I installed SuSE 7.0, but it comes with too much stuff. I couldn't be bothered to be sorting through the millions of packages to get just what I wanted, so I moved to Debian. Now, if theres something I need but haven't installed, I first apt-get it, then, because I have no internet connection, if it isn't on the CD I download it. But 9 times out of ten, what I need is on the disk, even Quake!

Then why the fsck do you want to change? I don't understand why you want to
leave a distro you have working to move to one which you obviously don't
know much about?

Then stay with Mandrake!!
