LDAP is x500, just cut down a bit.

That's with reference to the schema people usually use to hold POSIX
accounts. There are a couple of search examples given there to mimic the
behaviour of standard calls, such as getpwent(), which you just pop into a
string, execute, and play with the result. There's also a php ldap auth
module, I think, which would probably do it all for you and integrate with
the standard php calls (don't quote me on that though...)
