Yes, the lock often physically locks the cover onto the computer. There is
no easy solution to the problem, I guess you'll just have to resort to
hairpins and a lot of patience to pick the lock. If its of any help - the
lock works by rotating a bar into a slot on the other part of the case. If
you can prise the case open far enough you may be able to get a hacksaw
blade in to cut through this bar but I doubt it, they are usually quite well
made. Is it a flat-key lock or a tubular-key lock? Perhaps I can tell you
how to pick it off list.
