the general rule i use is swap size = 1.5 x ram
just curious..... you refer to swap as /swap   as if it has a mount point?
your do have a proper swap partition don't you? (one that you can't see 
through a file manager)
fstab entry like
/dev/hda2 swap swap default 0 0
