When writing audio to disk, you need to have the files in wav format -
most normal rippers or recording programs tend to use this format, and
then compress to mp3.
It's preferable to use the original wav files, rather than go
wav->mp3->wav again.
There might be some programs around that will transparently decode
mp3s, and write to CD for you, but I can't think of any. Try
Freshmeat.
I tend to just use the "write to disk" output plugin in XMMS to play
an mp3, and end up with a wav file on disk.
Burn those to CD with cdrecord, or X-Roast (which calls cdrecord).
No exactly pretty, but it works.
Cheers.
