I got better results 2.2.18->2.4.0-pre12 (the last 2.4 I've touched)
with make menuconfig; oldconfig would have had lots of questions, all
of which I wanted to answer "no" to, and it wouldn't have asked a
couple of questions I wanted to change my answer to.
