[Sheflug] Questions, questions questions...
Hi all,
Apologies for the rather unsubstantial topic, but pic'n'mix
questions today :-)
I got a computer for "the other half" yesterday, and decided to
evangelize on the joys of linux. So I got hold of the Progeny CDs
(fairly recent stuff, easy to install) and off I went. Well, install was
mostly nice (apart from a minor glitch that had me bogged down for a
couple of hours because no vt was available at the time...). So I had my
GNOME, KDE and things working. Mostly, a debian ststem without dselect
and with nice wizards (even though it hasn't got one for PPP, which is
extremely annoying). However, progeny installs grub instead of lilo
(well, it lets you choose, and I inadvertly chose grub, hoping it would
etect all the other OSs present). Right, I get a nice boot menu to
choose between progeny and progeny single user. No trace of the Win9x
partition... After going through the info page, I sussed out that I
needed to hack a file in /boot/grub/ (menu.lst or something along those
lines), and add a Windows entry. The entry is simply (from the top of my
head):
root (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1
Added that to the file, and ran grub-install, so I got some nice
extra files around /boot/grub. However, this did not install a new MBR.
Can anyone explain why this is so? Completely clueless about it...
On the other hand, the box's got a DVD player, so any
suggestions as to how to use it for fun and entertainment would be very
welcome. I believe you need xine, but then there's also livid...
Confused...
On this latter subject, and risking the ires of the present, may
I ask for a good DVD player for Windows98? I don't seem to find any
around, but then again I'm not too sure what I am looking for.
Thanks for your help,
José
