Thanks to Craig and Paul for your help.

I have been doing some lengthy tests and "the plot thickens".

The booting problems only occur when the computer has been running for less
that about twenty minutes. Longer than that, they disappear and the computer
boots properly.

With the new motherboard and the new video card I get the booting problems.
The card is really well seated in the socket.

With the new motherboard and the old video card, I get no booting problems
whatever.

I then reinstalled the old motherboard and tried it with the new video card.
There were no problems.

So the only combination which doesn't work is the new motherboard and the
new video card.

At the moment, I am runing new board+old card.
