I use Gkrellm for that - after a recommendaton - it also displays the
length of the last dialup until you connect again, it does other things:
CPU usage, mail notifier etc etc kinda like applets/epplets. Totally
crazy wacky themes too dude.
Very handy.
Which window manager are you using then Ian?
