What was the old system?!

What this means is an attempt to establish the driver and link it to the
hardware has failed (which it will presumably also have done during boot
up - issue dmesg to check. The most likely cause of this on a fresh
install is, as you rightly suspect, a hardware problem.

Take a look at the contents of /proc/interrupts to see how Linux has
allocated the IRQs. Quick tests you could try are making sure plug and
play os is set to "no" in the BIOS and physically moving the SBLive
around to other PCI slots or taking other cards out.
