Sorry only told you how to do half of it, now on the workstation...
mkdir /mnt/nfs
..to make the mount point for the laptop. Then make sure the ppp
connection is OK between the machines by pinging each other. If it is OK
you can mount the laptop with...
mount -t nfs laptop:/ /mnt/nfs
as root. Replace 'laptop' with the hostname/IP address of the laptop.
All being well you should now be able to go into /mnt/nfs and find the
contents of your laptop's harddisk, as if they were part of the
workstations local filesystem. Just point kde file manager to /mnt/nfs.
Beware, nfs over a serial link is VERY slow, even at 115,200 baud. Don't
expect to be doing anything in a hurry (and if your laptop is as old as
mine is, check it has 16550A serial ports not 16450 or the fastest you
will be able to run the link at is 19200 baud).
You want to connect the laptop to an MS Windows machine or the
workstation to talk to an MS Windows laptop? The serial ppp connection
can be made to work, but I ended up writing a program that emulates a
Hayes compatible modem to get MS Windows dialup networking to talk to
linux pppd across a null modem cable.
If the workstation was running MS Windows then you would need a windows
NFS client to access the NFS server on the laptop (all cost £££ no
freeware available when I last looked). Alternatively you could try to
use MS Windows file sharing by running a samba server on the laptop
aswell but that is outside the scope of this mail at this late hour.
In short, don't do it. Stick to linux.
