I can't tell you about Slack specifically as I don't run it, but in general:
Make sure your kernel supports reiserfs. 2.4.3 and up seem good, 2.4.7 works
fine here. There are backports to 2.2.x kernels but I have no idea how good
they are. Config -> File Systems -> ReiserFS Y. Compiling it in
monolithically rather than as a module is probably best, that way you can
have your root partition on reiserfs too. Note that you need a newish LILO
installed and to read the reiserfs docs to boot off reiserfs (specifically I
believe you have to turn off "tail packing" when formatting the drive). Get
the reiserfs tools package installed, read the docs carefully and then you
should be able to mkreiserfs on the drive you want. All your data on that
drive will be overwritten you can't change format types "on-line" as it were.
