I can't tell you about Slack specifically as I don't run it, but in general:

Make sure your kernel supports reiserfs. 2.4.3 and up seem good, 2.4.7 works 
fine here. There are backports to 2.2.x kernels but I have no idea how good 
they are. Config -> File Systems -> ReiserFS Y. Compiling it in 
monolithically rather than as a module is probably best, that way you can 
have your root partition on reiserfs too. Note that you need a newish LILO 
installed and to read the reiserfs docs to boot off reiserfs (specifically I 
believe you have to turn off "tail packing" when formatting the drive). Get 
the reiserfs tools package installed, read the docs carefully and then you 
should be able to mkreiserfs on the drive you want. All your data on that 
drive will be overwritten you can't change format types "on-line" as it were.
