Unfortunately Linux and most brands of Unix need an MMU (Memory
Mangement Unit) in the CPU to do clever things like virtual memory,
memory protection, etc. The Amiga 500 only had a Motorola 68000 CPU
which didn't have one of these (and was rare in that it had full
pre-emptive multitasking without requiring an MMU). There was a version
of Minix for the Amiga, or better still see if you can find a
68030/68040 accelerator board with a load more RAM on it - even these
are piteously slow these days, but you should be able to run linux/m68k.
I hope your Amiga has more than the 512K or 1M of memory fitted as standard!
