You can argue forever with this kind of thing. To make it easy get
hold of a scrap 486 and network it with your computer that you use
with KDE and GNOME. Any network card is fine. Maplins do some good
ones for not much
The choice of software for the firewall box is endless. You could
try E-Smith or Smoothwall 0.99 beta - not the old one - or Pizza Box
which is on the front cover of the August issue of Linux Format.
There's also the Mandrake 8.0 firewall on the front cover of the
September issue of LXF.
After that you get round to configuring Sendmail or Exim or Postfix
or Qmail to send mail followed by Fetchmail to collect mail and then
Procmail to send mail from your net facing box to your workstation.
Then there's fine tuning the net facing box to finish off. To make
sure that it's kind of secure.
