It seems the problem with 'ruthienet' was the fact that my 'hosts' file was
incorrect, and had the same name (mondas) associated with two different IP
no's :-/

As soon as this was corrected, things started to work as expected :-)

Many thanks to all who assisted and advised. I learned a *lot* this
afternoon. Much appreciated.
