The first one it detects is eth0. The second eth1. Roughly.
Physical correlation: none :( Sometimes, though, they are detected in order
of PCI slot I think.
The way to detect which is which varies from card to card. The easiest method
is to use a laptop and cross-over, or something. Bring up both interfaces
(with different IPs), plug the laptop directly into one NIC and see which
interface you can ping (making sure it's not forwarding packets though!!)
Usually a good idea to label the interfaces upon discovery.

(who has exactly the same problem with serial ports sometime too! 'cept there
