That seems to have done it.
However, I seem to have a problem which may or may not be hardware
related... perhaps someone could pass comment?

I have(had) a SuSE 7.0 system which was quite trouble free until it died
this morning. On trying to reboot, it just hung with a screen dump of what
I assume were register contents.

Since there was nothing on the system that presents an insurmountable loss
I eventually decided to reinstall the OS. However it does one of two things.
a) halts with the screen dump like before
or
b) halts with the message
"request-module[block-major-8]: Root fs not mounted
VFS: Cannot open root device 08:07
Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:07"

This, although I have successfully fdisked the disk and created a small DOS
partition and booted from it.

Anyone got any ideas?

Steve
