For xterm's only (not kterms, dtterms, rxvt, etc[1]):
If you hold down the CTRL-key and press anbd hold button 3 on your mouse
(that is, the right-mouse button unless you've swapped the buttons over)
whilst the mouse cursor is within a window, you'll get a list of font sizes
... from "unreadable" to "huge" :-) Holding down CTRL with button 1 or
button 2 (button 2 = both mouse buttons on some configs) will give yet more
xterm options.
As for anything that isn't an xterm, I can't help :)

[1] it *might* work on other GUI terminals but it started off on xterms and
others copied it :)
