You can't fsck DOS disks (assuming that's what it is?). If you formatted it
ext2, you can fsck.ext2 it.
You may want to check out badblocks(8), that'll tell you what you already
know. Other than that, there's not a lot you can do except to attempt to
retrieve as much data as possible. I wouldn't bother trying to ftp it if I
were you - can you not get hold of a spare hdd? It's usually good option -
if you copy from one to the other using dd and small block sizes, you'll get
back as much of the data as possible.
