Whoooops.

N.N.N.0 and N.N.N.255 for any IP range[1] are broadcast addresses - you shouldn't attempt
to assign a machine to use those addresses.

Darrell> (I used netconfig on slackware to configure it). It says

Darrell> 192.168.0.1 in an internet browser to get to the
Darrell> configuration. I try this and it says it can't access
Darrell> it. I have used linux for ages but I have no experience
Darrell> whatsoever in networking. I'm hoping someone can help me
    Darrell> with this.

Leave the gateway on 192.168.0.1, and configure the other machine to
be on 192.168.0.2, with the gateway set to 192.168.0.1.

Also make sure the netmask is the same for both machines - it should
be 255.255.255.0 (otherwise written as /24) for both.

Cheers.

Baz.

i.e. multicast.
