I was about to say that :-) You're right, José.

Darrell,

I had a read through the Smoothwall docs (smoothwall.org) they're quite good
- have another read through them and ensure that you're setting everything up
correctly.

Things to note:

Unless you have a DNS server running locally or on the Smoothwall box, and
your workstation is setup to use it, you will need to set smoothwall to allow
you to connect to a DNS server (if you're not aware, a DNS server is the
server that allows your PC to figure out that www.sheflug.co.uk is actually
194.247.47.86 - hostname to IP resolution). My guess is that you'll need it.

Secondly, with Smoothwall 0.9.9 you connect to the Smoothwall box on a wierd
port - either http://192.168.1.1:81/ (standard connection) or
https://192.168.1.1:445/ (secure connection).

José is right, if you're using 192.68.1.1, this is wrong. The Smoothwall box
is 192.168.1.1, and your workstation is probably best on 192.168.1.2, with the
gateway set to 192.168.1.1.

You will also have to enter a valid DNS server address into the
/etc/resolv.conf file on your workstation. Either check your ISPs help pages
(normally useless), or look through /var/log/messages on your Smoothwall box
after you dialup/connect with the 'less' or 'more' commands - you should see a
line like:

Oct 6 12:00:00 pppd[1234] Primary DNS server: 100.200.100.200

(all the numbers are just examples)

So, for that enter the line

nameserver 100.200.100.200 into /etc/resolv.conf on your workstation. The
Smoothwall box, being the machine that is dialing up should deal with that
itself.

Cheers.

Baz.
