fwiw, I use the following partitioning info:
/boot -10M ext2
/ 256M ext2
/tmp 640M ext2
swap 256M (same as RAM size)
/var 2G reiserfs
/usr 3G reiserfs
/home (The Rest = ~30G) reiserfs
Of these, only /home and /var realy change and, when doing a reinstall, only
/var and /home are preserved.
/var contains all logs, database files (postgres), etc
/home contains user home directories.
I also tend to put shared user programs, Staroffice, java 1.3.1, Applix ,
etc. into /home/apps with links into /usr/local/bin on each client machine
for executables. The reason being that I can then share the /home directory
with multiple computers as a single nfs shared directory rather than sharing
it as well as /usr/local or installing the software on every client machine.
