Ah, I didn't know that.  Would probably have gone with Deb or Slack 
then, because it is just those patches (put in place to help a beginner) 
which make things difficult when a beginner wants to do the sort of 
things I'm trying.  Wouldn't it be nice to have a note somewhere saying 
exactly what they _have_ slapped on?  This has bugged me from the start 
of my Linux experience when people would say things like: "just get 
yourself a current kernel and start compiling..."

I see your point.  But if you have a kernel installed by your distro 
installation procedures and do not have a record of the .config file 
used...it is rather handy.
