I see what you mean.

This definately isn't just a RH7.2 problem - I had it in 7.1, but it
seemed to magically get fixed - certainly never messed with keymappings.

Still can't figure it out tho - the bug entry didn't help much.

I'm managed to clear the stupid mapping with

xmodmap -e "clear mod1"

but I'm unable to set mod1 to Alt_L again.

man xmodmap tells me to use xev to figure out the key code:

KeyRelease event, serial 28, synthetic NO, window 0x2800001,
    root 0x32, subw 0x2800002, time 3667721169, (43,54), root:(695,444),
    state 0x0, keycode 64 (keysym 0xffe9, Alt_L), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 characters: ""

MMm. Very nice.

Can't get the various combinations of

xmodmap -e "some bizarre command"

to work.

Help!

Will> At least Debian I can start a flamewar.

Shame on you :-)

I had a few hassles and very nearly ended up running FreeBSD 4.4
and/or Slackware 8, but I didn't have the time to sit and learn how to
get everything just the way I like, so I fell back to RH7.2 - call me
lazy, call me stooopid, I dunno. :-)

My laptop runs Woody and the only reason it's on Woody is that I can
get the bandwidth at work to dist-upgrade it.

Potato is just too old for desktop use now when compared to other
distros - I want X 4.x and Gnome 1.4 or KDE 2.2 (obviously not gonna
see that on Debian yet...)

Cheers.

Baz.
