Yes, you can actually force it to fsck a partition that is mounted
read/write, but it will almost certainly end in total breakage and
loss of filesystem.  Did that one, just the once. :)

If you mount it read only and the fsck finds it needs to modify it
then you will need to umount it, which isn't going to be possible
when its your only partition.  For this you'll need to have some
form of rescue floppy/cd with the required tools on.

That's all based on normal fsck though and not reiserfsck, but I
assume the theory s the same for both.
