[Sheflug] Wireless Internet Workshop 9-10th November
Just a quick reminder about the wireless Internet workshop that has been
organised in Sheffield for 9-10th November. We intend to follow models
developed by Consume [1] who will be coming along, and the LRP [2].
The venue for both days has been confirmed as the Redundant Technology
Initiative, Access Space, 1 Sidney Street, Sheffield S1 4RG [3] which is
opposite the Rutland Pub in town.
The timetable, as such, is that 2pm-4pm on Friday 9th and 2pm-4pm on
Saturday 10th are core hours which will be more focussed with demos,
discussion and presentations but around those core hours will be less
formal "hacktime". Turning up for 12-ish on both days should be fine. The
workshop is free to attend so please come along if you are interested.
For those who wish to know more about Consume, the Consume project, so the
story goes, was first developed here in the UK by James Stevens (whom we
are fortunate to have at the workshop) who had just co-founded Lateral, one
of the UK's first web design agencies back in 1995. Lateral was leasing a
2Mb/s line from a business park in north London at a cost of £200k a year.
James found that he was only using a quarter of the bandwidth and he wanted
to redistribute the spare capacity to other creative groups in his
neighborhood. Bandwidth has come down in price considerably since those
days but the principle remains the same. Consume is not about
'Internet-for-free' but is about establishing peering relationships between
those folks who are prepared to build a node and share their connectivity
with others. More on this here [4] and more Consume press stuff here [5].
The Radio Authority has been sympathetic to the Consume project and you can
read the latest consultation on the use of licence-exempt spectrum for the
provision of public telecommunication services at [6].
