Erm... I was quite shocked to read that in the newer kernels,
hdparm doesn't produce incredible results, as the new IDE driver
autotunes to get the best performance. There was a message in ucol last

Any de-bunking of this post? My personal experience is that of
late, hdparm $OPTIONS didn't improve throughput (spelling?) that much
(by the looks of hdparm -tT /dev/hdX).
