RE: [Sheflug] Wuftpd configuration problems + FIREWALLS

Ta for comments both of you.

I've now uninstalled wuftpd and reinstalled proftpd. I'll sort out the
guest accounts in that instead - as I've sorted out anon and user
accounts easily with proftpd, just a bit more digging will sort out the
rest.

Another issue I was wondering whether the list could clear up. I use
Firestarter to configure my firewall. However, I was wondering whether
I was correct in my thoughts that the buck stops with iptables (kinda
built into the kernal even?), and no matter which firewall proggy I use
they all simply alter the iptables configuration. Is this true? If so
I suppose even though my setup has bastille loading up at startup as
long as firestarter is the last thing run (in /etc/rc.local) it will
overwrite the work of bastille in iptables? If this is the case then
how come I can 'turn off' the firewall within firestarter - or so it
claims on the icon button in the gui; can this be strictly true?

As you can tell I am a little confused about firewalls in linux. Using
mandrake 8.1 btw. Any pointers appreciated since I am not only running
an ftp server but also hosting web pages in apache. While at the moment
this activity is only known by a few, in the future I will need to be
fairly confident in my security measures.

Thanks

Neil
