Hmm...I think I'll also don me flame-proof suit...
I agree that its not necessarily a 'right', and that if everyone had
broadband, the web would be no faster than it is now for the simple reason of
all websites would be written with flaisher graphics, more sound, and
ridiculous amounts of flash and Java. About the only thing that will remain
quick is downloads...assuming all the big servers have there fat pipes made
fatter to cope with the huge increase in bandwidth demand.
There's also been some pointing out of little facts in uk.telecom.broadband
over the past few months ... BT's ADSL has a contention ratio of <x>:1 (I
can't remember what <x> is ... 20 I think), so for a 1MB pipe, you have 20
people sharing it. 1024kbps / 20 gives each user umm...51kbps. Not much more
than your average modem.
Telewest's Blueyonder says that they will guarentee 256kbps even though they
have a 20:1 contention ratio. But I'll need to find out if they still say
that (that was when I signed up with them back in April). I don't know if
ADSL or NTL's cable has a similar gurantee.
I've not read the site that Richard posted about yet ... maybe the petition
addresses some of these things? Or is it just an accessibility petition? I'll
have a read later.
That my 2 pennies worth anyhow.

I'd be quite happy to stick with a bike ... unfortuantly my body and cycling
in Sheffield don't mix. Maybe I ought to start a new site:
www.lesshills4sheffield.co.uk
:)
