Right digital camera's are supported by Linux and so are compact flash and
smart media readers.

so the first thing you need to decide is how you are going to connect the
camera to the PC. directly or via one of the media readers mention above.

your best option is to connect using one of the readers.

secondly

Your computer sounds like it's and AT form factor. so if that's the case you
need to vast maplin and get some USB port which will connect to the
terminals on the motherboard. they will fill on expansion bay, either at the
front using a drive bay, or at the back of the machine on an expansion
plate.
