I'd go for Debian or SuSE myself.  Just about anything so that you 
get to use iptables properly and write your own firewall rules.  Even 
Slackware is quite good.  If you want to start from scratch once 
again then why not use BSD for a firewall.  That's what it's used for 
mostly.

 If you do go for the SuSE firewall then I've got the PDF version of 
the manual.  So, you don't need to spend any money on that.  The 
latest firewall book by Bob Ziegler gives quite a few more clues than 
the iptables howto does.
