Well, thats an offer too good to miss!
When you ping localhost, are you sure you aren't pinging 127.0.0.1? This
is using a virtual network interface lo, rather than a real card.
Which card is being used? It may be that there is some conflict in
loading the card. Is anything output in the syslog when you start the
network?
