Damian,

Whilst I remember, your modem might be set to not give a dialling tone - once 
again, there is a Hayes command to control the speaker volume on the modem - 
stick it in the chat script before the commands to pickup the line and dial.

IIRC, it's ATMn where 0 =< n =< 2, 0 begin off, 2 begin loud.
