[Sheflug] New Kernel keeps curpting Ext2 file systems

Can anyone help me ?

I'm running Mandrake 8.0 and have just upgraded my kernel from 2.4.3
to 2.4.15, everything seems to work fine, except that the new kernel
seems to be doing something strange to my ext2 file systems. After
shutting down linux under the new Kernel all the file systems are
reported as being unmounted ok, but when I bring the machine back up
(under either the new or the old kernel) all the configuration files
in /var (hda7) and /etc (hda6) have locks, giving io errors when
trying to read any of the files within /var or /etc. If I boot up
using a rescue disk and run fsck it fixes varrious errors on my /var
and /etc and I can reboot and everything will work fine again until
    the new kernel messes up.

Has anyone had a simular problem or got any idea what option I might
be missing in my new kernel ? I have tried various Ext3
configurations (i.e. including support, not including support and
having it as a module) but I still suffer the same symptons.

    Any ideas anyone ?

My boot log under the new kernel looks like this:
