Hi richard,
we use sophos here and I have found it on the whole pretty good. See my
reply to alex with regard to linux viruses.
With regard to it running on linux, well we generally keep our linux
machines pretty up to date so its use there has really been in spotting
macro virus in doc files that are residing on a samba server.
