[Sheflug] Kernel Compile

Dear all

After compiling a 2.4.18 kernel successfully on my Debian GNU/Linux 
laptop I thought I'd try it on my SuSE workstation.

After typing in 'make xconfig' I get the following error message....

"Application initialisation failed:  couldn't connect to display 
":0:0"    "

looks like the X server is refusing access to something.  Anyone know 
how to get it to accept my request for an Xconfig ?  I've read man 
xhost and tried something with that but that didn't make any sense 
either.
