[Sheflug] protocol?
hi all,
recently I tried connecting to btinternet, and although I could connect
to a server (i.e. the dial up server) I couldn't connect to any other
machine. A routing table showed I was indeed connected to a dial up
server.
I couldn't connect to web sites, ftp, or even the btinternet mail server.
I tried pinging the server address I was connected to, and got a
response, but could get no response from any other machine. I
disconnected and reconnected several times, and still experienced the
same difficulty. Each time I connected, the connection remained until I
terminated it (the longest I left it was for about 1 hour).
bt technical told me that my protocols needed reloading, and that my
software wasn't supported.
I didn't follow their advice, as I could not see how the protocols could
corrupt so easily. After about 5 hours, without even rebooting my
machine, or logging off then on again, everything suddenly started
working again, including the ability to ping any machine on the net.
Is this a problem with my Linux setup? I am running caldera. Could
someone offer a logical explanation as to how all traffic through the
btinternet server could suddenly stop, and yet I can still ping the
btinternet dial-up server? And how can all traffic suddenly start again?
Thanks,
Damian
