There was absolutely nothing wrong with it but since I'm fed up to 
the back teeth with people ignoring what I politely ask them to do 
then I have set up an out-responder message which can be turned on or 
off at will.

Unfortunately some of us will have to temporarily suffer due to the 
efforts of other people.  This includes myself.  I get the same 
message whenever I post to the list.  

So, the sooner some of us - and not Chris - comply with a polite 
request then the sooner we can drop the auto-response ... temporarily.
