I've actually now solved my problem - I did a full local install to ~/OpenOffice.org1.0, and then did: cd cd OpenOffice.org1.0 chmod -R a+rwx * Don't ask me why it worked; I have no idea. I'm currently trying to debug further and am following up with the guys on #openoffice.org (OPN). One of the questions I did get asked on irc was whether or not I was running RedHat 7.2 - I presume there must be an issue with running OOo on RH7.2 (I don't know what it was; I'm a Debianite and hence didn't ask). Might be worth checking the OOo web pages, IssueZilla, or logging onto irc and asking there. HTH, Alex.
