Likewise, I've only ever used cdrecord.  I only ever burned one bad CD -
the guy who gave me the image to burn messed up the file permissions, so
the ISO was bad, not the burn :)  Try burning at a lower speed, and shut
down any applications that move large amounts of data across the bus -
audio/video/streaming/filesharing - or use lots of CPU.  Personally, I
tend to burn (as root) using nice.  Oh, and in a runlevel that won't spawn
X. :)
