Re: [Sheflug] networking need advice

Sammy,
I am by no means an expert on this as I only know how to do it using
the 'GUI' configuration tools that come with the Mandrake 8.2 distro
(downloadable from www.mandrake.com) There are ways to do it by editing
various config files in /etc/ for most of the distros, but erm... I
don't know which ones or how to do it.

Anyhow for Mandrake 8.2 do the following:

Open up the mandrake Control Center
Select Network & Internet
Click on Connection
Click Wizard
Let Mandrake auto detect your network card (Next)
(on mine it detects both a network card and a modem, so unless you want
to configure both uncheck the modem)
Next, OK
Specify IP address and Netmask
Next,
Specify the hostname.domain
Specify The DNS server (presumably your XP box)
Specify the Gateway IP.
Next,
Restart your network (next)
All done !

Sorry if this explentation is very basic, but I'm one of these people
who is just lost with out a GUI, luckly for me though thanks to KDE,
Gnome and all the hard work thats gone into Linux, even I can use it !!!
:)

Hope that gets you up and running. (I think on SuSE and redhat there
are simular network config tools in their own control centres that will
do the same thing.)
