Re: [Sheflug] Small operating system
Of course, Minix is always good! Works with ne2000 compatible network cards,
so get one of those and you can have a multitasking, networked 286 in no time
(YMMV :) Of course, you'll get no graphics, no productivity tools, and very
few system tools, but for playing with operating systems and figuring out how
they work, it's ideal.
However, get hold of a 386, and myriad versions of Linux are at your
disposal. The two most commonly referenced small linuxes (plural??) are:
tomsrtbt (http://www.toms.net/rb/)
this is good for repairs and system checks, as well as for network use as
long as no persistance of configuration is required (the config is on RAM
disk, which is wiped out each boot)
mulinux (http://sunsite.dk/mulinux/)
this is a complete desktop environment, including X, gcc, netscape, and
all kinds of other stuff. It is bootable off 2 or more floppies (depending on
the optional extras you choose) and can be installed to hdd.
